Where are we heading?

Senderens seeks to be part of the change

To protect the present and future of new generations.

The long-term strategy aims to achieve a sustainable, competitive and climate-neutral economy by 2050.

To achieve these objectives, Renewable Natural Gas or Biomethane plays a major role.

The formula

Biomethane, or Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) is a non-fossil fuel, containing at least 90% methane (CH4) and chemically identical to Natural Gas. This purity allows it to be injected directly into Natural Gas transportation, supply and storage networks.

Biomethane can be produced economically in two ways:

  • Anaerobic Digestion of Biomass.

  • Thermal gasification (pyrolysis).

GNR or Biomethane is particularly interesting in Spain as it has:

  • Extensive Natural Gas infrastructure .

  • High availability of renewable waste biomass.

  • Excellent climate and high temperatures to optimize anaerobic digestion.

  • Extensive agricultural sector that consumes the high quality organic fertilizer generated in the process.

Advantages

Biomethane production is carbon-neutral: although its future combustion generates CO2, it will be absorbed in the renewable biomass.

Decreases uncontrolled emissions of CH4, a much more gas-intensive greenhouse gas.

Additionally, biomethane can be produced carbon-negative by sequestering CO2 through condensation and soil injection.

Biomethane in Europe

In Europe there are more than 25,000 Biogas + Biomethane plants that are growing rapidly, especially accelerated since 2020.

The most significant growth within Europe has been in France, along with Germany, Italy and Denmark.

It is estimated that biomethane in Europe can generate hundreds of thousands of jobs. Taking into account Spain's potential, there could be tens of thousands in our country, and in rural areas, where population fixation is a State policy.

The challenge we face is that the European Union currently has a production target for the year 2030 of more than 10 times the current production of biomethane.

Together we can create a better future.
